Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan personally expressed their appreciation for the portraits Scott made of them during their campaigns. As a photojournalist, Scott covered many of the major presidential political conventions and inaugurations, photographing campaign hopefuls and every commander-in-chief beginning with John F. His coverage of the 19 presidential political campaigns led him to create an innovative multimedia exhibit, “Campaign ‘76” for the Milwaukee Art Museum, which is now part of the museum’s permanent collection. His instincts for capturing the human spirit, nature’s majestic beauty and dynamic action inspired Conde Nast Traveler, Time, Newsweek, National Geographic, Life and numerous other national publications to feature his work.
Five years later he shared in a Pulitzer Prize for the expose “Pollution: the Spreading Menace.” Named Wisconsin Photographer of the Year, Scott also won the coveted Inland Press Association’s “Best of Show Award” three times. In his first year as a photojournalist with The Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel in 1962, his exciting photograph of two competitors under sail not only won a major award but was featured prominently at the Seattle World’s Fair. Scott spent more than 50 years creating award-winning images around the world – chronicling some of the major news stories of our time. Scott, 87, of Madison, WI, died Augafter a short hospitalization.
